Criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling are the Four Horseman of relationship failure according to The Gottman Institute. As a middle-aged man who has been married over two decades and who has provided an ear to thousands of people whose relationships have failed, I think the Gottman Institute is onto something. Most people in a relationship will fall prey to each of the Four Horseman, probably many times, on both the “giving” and “receiving” end. Thus, is it is important to be aware of the Four Horseman, and moreover, to mitigate them. Enjoy this short video!
