The other day I attended a Bible study where we created a framework for how to read the parables attributed to Jesus Christ. Here are some bullet points.
Be Mindful of “Mistakes”
- Allegories: overdone, overbroad.
- Indigenizing: appropriating to current time/culture.
- Universalizing/Existentialism. Start with, “What did it mean to them?” not “What does it mean to me?”
How to Read a Parable
- Avoid preconceived notions.
- What is the historical, social, cultural context?
- Who is the target audience?
- What happened before and after the parable?
- What is repeated?
- What is unexpected?
- What is the conclusion?
- What does the parable reveal about God?
We used our framework to study the parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard, found in Matthew 20: 1 – 16. I was familiar with that parable. However, the framework we created, along with the input of others in the study group, brought the parable to a whole new level for me. Maybe my notes will help you!
