Middle-aged Man: Dry January
I haven’t been able to land on theme or resolution for 2026. Thus, when I got this email from Banner Health, I thought, “Sure, why not?” Dry January is easy. I did eat, drink, and spend more than usual over the holiday season. Cutting out alcohol for a month is a low bar for cutting spending and calories. Maybe Dry January will do more than that, but if nothing else, that’s enough. So again, “Why not?”
“Could Dry January be the reset your body needs?
After the holidays, many people look for simple ways to feel better and get back on track. Dry January is one option. This month-long break from alcohol began in 2013 and has since helped millions of people rethink their drinking habits and focus on overall well-being.
Even taking a break for 31 days can lead to noticeable benefits, including:
- Better sleep and more energy – Alcohol can interfere with deep sleep, so skipping it may help you feel more rested
- Weight changes – Cutting out empty calories and late-night snacking may support weight goals
- Improved liver health – A break from alcohol gives your liver time to recover
- Money saved – Many people save more than they expect in just one month
- Mental clarity – Some notice less anxiety, better focus and an improved mood
